As the subspecialty of neurocritical care grows, so do the number and variety of textbooks on the subject—many of them written by Dr Wijdicks. Catastrophic Neurologic Disorders in the Emergency Department is now in its second edition, and it is the third textbook in Dr Wijdicks’ trilogy on issues related to acute neurological management in the settings of the neurological intensive care unit, the medical or surgical intensive care unit, and the emergency department (ED).

As one might expect, there is considerable overlap among the 3 texts in the trilogy, particularly between the first and the last, both of which apply a disease-oriented approach to the main disorders encountered in neurocritical care. Important differences exist, however. Catastrophic Neurologic Disorders in the Emergency Department focuses on a somewhat different audience: ED physicians who care for neurologically ill patients, and neurologists and neurosurgeons who consult on patients in the ED.
