We would like to thank Dr Follett and his colleagues and Drs Minguez-Castellanos and Escamilla-Sevilla for their recent letters in response to our editorial, "Subthalamic nucleus vs globus pallidus interna deep brain stimulation, the rematch."1 We are in complete agreement with these authors on the 2 points from the editorial that they have highlighted. First, there is a "need for further research to establish the long-term benefits and potential risks of these treatment approaches." And second, we should endeavor to match individual patient needs with the strengths and weaknesses of individual targets.1 Given that both targets have proven clinically effective, research efforts should be directed toward the identification of patient subgroups to whom one or the other approach may be more suited. We would like to briefly comment on each of these 2 important topics.
