The past 2 decades have witnessed a veritable revolution in information about stroke. The available technology to quickly and safely evaluate patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases has improved dramatically. Formerly, therapeutic nihilism reigned supreme, and most physicians believed that little could be done to prevent or treat stroke. Now stroke therapeutics has also changed dramatically, boosted substantially in 1996 with the approval of intravenous recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator to treat patients with acute ischemic stroke. Unfortunately, few neurologists and even fewer general physicians, internists, and emergency physicians have been able to keep up-to-date with the knowledge they need to treat and prevent strokes. This book aims at the large information gap.
