Dystonia 4 is the publication of an international symposium held June 13 to June 15, 2002. In this volume, the advances in the 5 years since the third symposium are emphasized, including the development of a mouse model, cloning of the gene for DYT 1 dystonia, and greater recognition of the relevant protein, torsinA. Diagnostic and therapeutic hints are present but are not the primary purpose of the book, nor is it offered as an encyclopedia of movement disorders. The rapidity of change in the field is emphasized by many of the 44 individual contributions and is also demonstrated in the summary preface, which mentions multiple varieties of dystonia genes and loci.

The reports on the pathophysiology of dystonia include the concept of surround inhibition as a principal function of the basal ganglia, as well as distortion in sensory feedback as a major contributor to the development of abnormal movements. . . . [Full Text of this Article]
