The concept of an entire book dedicated to channelopathies would have been hard to conceive of just 10 years ago. This text is a testament to the remarkable progress that has been made in synthesizing clinical experience with the rapid progress in the molecular pathophysiologic investigation of these disorders. Channelopathies of the Nervous System is the most comprehensive text to date on this growing field.
The first third of the book lays out a very detailed outline of the scientific state of knowledge in this area. The first section jumps right into the physiology, molecular biology, and pharmacology of ion channels. This is followed by a narrative of the advancements in the laboratory methods responsible for this field from the late 19th century ion equilibrium experiments, through early current and voltage clamp recordings, to the transfection of cloned ion channels in mammalian cell lines and advanced electrophysiologic techniques.
