Not Our Knife: Gamma Knife Surgery for Parkinson Disease

We would like to clarify several issues concerning the editorial written
by Dr Jankovic1 on our article "Complications
of Gamma Knife Surgery for Parkinson Disease,"2
both published in the December issue of the ARCHIVES. The gamma knife procedures
were not performed at Emory University, as the editorial mistakenly implies,
but were done at an outside institution. This was stated clearly in the abstract
as well as the "Methods" and "Conclusions" sections. Also, patients were not
seen during the 6-month postoperative period, as suggested, but rather at
varying times after surgery within an 8-month period. Finally, the editorial
criticizes the study for not being controlled, again reflecting the misconception
that the patients were part of a clinical trial at our institution.
