Dr Green has written a comprehensive textbook on dementing illnesses
that he and the publisher hope will find an audience among primary care physicians.
The pocket-sized book is divided into 4 sections. The first section provides
a background of definitions, epidemiology, the diagnostic process, and information
on dementias other than Alzheimer disease. The second section is devoted to
Alzheimer disease and discusses risk factors, genetics, biomarkers, natural
history, and neuropathology. A third section contains a chapter on current
and emerging therapies as well as chapters on pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic
management of the neuropsychiatric symptoms of Alzheimer disease. The final
section provides a list of resources for clinicians. The book is organized
into a traditional disease-oriented rather than a problem-oriented structure.
This arrangement may not be ideal for physicians who are not familiar with
much of the subject matter.
