Within the past 5 years, 306 books have been published that directly address epilepsy and, among these, approximately 200 are directed toward physicians. Given this abundance, the often repetitive nature of medical reference material, and the expense of a typical textbook, it would be particularly useful that a new text address a clinically important yet underrepresented topic and provide comprehensive, useful, and up-to-date information. Perhaps with this in mind, the editors of this text clearly state their mandate:
Although many texts review epilepsy, most focus on the epileptic condition itself and devote little attention to the commonly encountered problem of diagnosing and treating seizures in the context of another medical condition. This book addresses the compelling need for a consolidated and comprehensive reference on this subject . . . we have aimed to create a reference source for neurologists and other clinicians that emphasizes practical clinical information not easily accessible . . .
