The third international conference on Charcot-Marie-Tooth disorders was held in October 1998, and the proceedings were published in 1999. Unlike many such compendia, this book is a gem, especially for anyone with a serious interest in neuromuscular disorders; it is the best single source of modern information on hereditary neuropathies available.
The organizers brought together most of the known authorities in the clinical, cellular, and molecular biological science of these conditions. The contributors, in turn, have written concise but thorough reviews of their fields so that the clinical features in man, phenotype/genotype correlations, the biology of myelin proteins and their role in pathogenesis, Schwann cell and axonal interactions, and natural and genetically engineered animal models are all discussed in depth. The quality of the chapters is of such a high order that it is difficult to single out any author. However, the editors, perhaps inadvertently, included 2 almost identical versions . . .
