YOUR PATIENT is a 61-year-old man with the slow onset of some recent stiffness predominantly in the left arm and hand, some clumsiness when walking, and a slight pill-rolling tremor of the left hand. Further physical examination is consistent with the diagnosis of early Parkinson disease (PD). Magnetic resonance imaging and ligand-specific positron emission tomography studies confirm the diagnosis. Examination of the polymorphic variations of the parkin gene and the other major PD susceptibility genes determines PD type 7, which has a mean age of onset of 61 to 64 years.

The patient's microdisk containing his standard genome variations profile (SGVP) as well as other personal medical and financial profiles is inserted into the electronic Physician's Desk Reference Reader linked to the updated database for pharmacogenetic data, covering adverse events and efficacy data for all medicines registered during the past 20 years.
