Since its publication in 1986, the first edition of The Facial Nerve has become the standard comprehensive textbook on facial nerve disorders. The second edition is almost certain to retain this position.
The first edition was, by any standard, extensively illustrated. A large amount of illustrative material has been added, including clinical photographs, anatomic drawings, and photomicrographs, and the new edition now has almost 2000 illustrations.
The book retains its basic organization into multiple subsections. However, section VII of the first edition, "Special Problems Associated With Facial Paralysis," has been dropped.
Section I, "Applied Basic Science and Clinical Fundamentals," is largely the same as it was in the first edition, although it has picked up 3 new chapters. The new chapters include a discussion of the facial nerve in animals, the experimental basis of nerve repair, and the histopathology of the facial nerve and the temporal bone. The chapter on . . .
