INTRODUCTION

In 1960, the general presidential election introduced television as a critical factor in the election process as a series of 4 television debates between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon was scheduled. Kennedy won the November election, embarking on a new age of emphasis on technological advancement for the United States. The struggle between the Western and Communist worlds dominated the international scene as the world was deep in the midst of the Cold War. On May 1, 1960, an American U2 pilot's plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. He was eventually convicted of treason and sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Soviet Union. Nikita Khruschev demanded reorganization of the United Nations and warned the United States that if it interfered with Cuba there would be rocket attacks.¹ Neurology was there.
