Use and Interpretation of Laboratory Tests in Neurology

Dr Peter has assembled the third edition of this handy and largely comprehensive guide to both routine and more exotic laboratory tests used in neurology. I have the second edition on my bookshelf and have referred to it on numerous occasions during the last 4 years.

This edition is organized in a similar fashion to the prior ones, with laboratory tests arranged for the most part according to disease category. For example, chapters can be found on behavioral neurology and degenerative diseases, inflammatory myopathies, multiple sclerosis, and paraneoplastic syndromes. As in the past, the chapter on nervous system infections has the largest number of entries, and I have found this section to be particularly useful in practice. Each pathogen is discussed from an epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory standpoint. Recent advances in testing, including the use of polymerase chain reaction, are reviewed and references are provided for further reading.
