Intraoperative Diagnosis of CNS Tumors is a clear, instructive initial resource for postgraduate trainees and practicing professionals in general surgical pathology who engage in this diagnostic process. Overall, the book is intelligently organized and easily readable. The opening chapter, dealing with technical aspects of frozen-section diagnosis, provides a strong foundation for the remainder of the book. For example, one of the figures demonstrates that even the unaided eye can discern valuable diagnostic information from the pattern of the smear on the glass slide. Such helpful observations, in addition to practical tips about staining procedures and artifacts, are particularly useful for those learning the tricks of the trade. The remainder of the text covers the major categories of central nervous system (CNS) neoplastic lesions in sufficient detail, emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis. Extremely useful tables are included as a guide to the subtleties of differential diagnosis.
