This volume is a series of articles on the development of motor function based on the proceedings of the first MacKeith Meeting held by the Royal Society of Medicine in London, England, in 1994. The authors are a distinguished group of researchers in the field of motor development from Europe, North America, and Australia. They present detailed research data as well as broad theoretical frameworks to better understand the development of skilled action in humans.

The book, which is No. 143 in the series Clinics in Developmental Medicine, consists of 16 chapters. The first lays the neurobiological groundwork for later chapters by providing a thorough yet concise review of brain development. It also addresses how the maturation of the brain is expressed in fetal and neonatal movement and muscle tone. The chapter is richly illustrated and clearly written.
