Computerized Tomography in Brain Biopsy-Proven Herpes Simplex Encephalitis

Early Normal Results

Stephen B. Greenberg, MD; Larry Taber, MD; Edward Septimus, MD; Steve Kohl, MD; Jennifer Puck, MD; R. Nick Bryan, MD, PhD

Arch Neurol. 1981;38(1):58-59.

Abstract

• Five patients with brain biopsy-proven herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) had normal computerized tomographic (CT) scans one to seven days after the onset of symptoms referable to the CNS. Although an abnormal CT scan is helpful in the recognition of HSE, an early normal study does not preclude the diagnosis.
