Subacute Inclusion Body Encephalitis Associated With Myopathy

Kevin E. Bove, MD; Samuel A. Shelburne, Jr., MD

Arch Neurol. 1972;27(1):42-44.

Abstract

Intranuclear inclusions suggesting intranuclear virus replication were found in sarcolemmal nuclei of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles of a patient with subacute encephalitis with Cowdry type A intranuclear inclusion bodies. Muscle fibers exhibited severe degenerative changes, including occasional stigmata of denervation. The morphological evidence favors interpretation of both the encephalitis and the myopathy as virus induced. This case provides support for the emerging concept of viral myopathy. Although myopathy in patients with latent encephalitis due to measles virus has not been stressed, the frequency of its occurrence has not been examined by systematic postmortem sampling of the voluntary musculature.
