Abstract
A patient with probable systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was found at necropsy to have a benign brain tumor classified as an atypical vascular hamartoma. Electron microscopic study revealed myxovirus-like particles in the tumor nuclei. It is concluded that the SLE and its corticosteroid treatment caused an immunologic deficit which facilitated virus invasion of a preexisting hamartoma. This case exemplifies the possibility in a wide range of diseases that the detection of a virus may merely indicate secondary invasion of previously damaged tissue.
